On the 1st of this month SoftBank Group finished paying for its stake in OpenAI. It was the last of three installments. The running total is about 10 trillion yen, and the holding is 13 percent. SoftBank did not pay early, because OpenAI had said it would not go public this year.
Seven days later the Financial Times reported that OpenAI's annualized revenue is roughly $20 billion below the level its investors had been working from. It was not a story about sales falling. The figure that had been circulating was one investors had assembled themselves, in order to set OpenAI next to Anthropic. The two companies count an annualized run rate differently. Anthropic includes sales that go through its cloud partners; OpenAI does not.
The next day, the 9th, the stock that fell was in Tokyo. SoftBank Group was also the single largest drag on the Nikkei 225 that session. OpenAI is not listed anywhere. The 13 percent carries no market price. The only thing with a price on it is the stock of the company holding it.
The money paid out is fixed now. What moves is the estimate of what that money turned into, and this time the estimate was rewritten by a newspaper rather than by an earnings report or a filing. That is why this name sits near the top of the message boards here more or less permanently.

その7日後、英フィナンシャル・タイムズが、OpenAIの年換算売上高は投資家に伝わっていた水準より200億ドル低いと報じました。売上が落ちたという記事ではありません。それまで出回っていた数字は、投資家がアンソロピックと比べるために自分たちで組み立てたものでした。年換算の数え方が両社で違います。アンソロピックはクラウド経由の売上を数に入れ、OpenAIは入れていません。
翌9日の東京で下げたのは、ソフトバンクグループでした。日経平均をいちばん押し下げたのもこの一社です。OpenAIは上場していません。13%の持ち分に市場価格はつきません。値段がついているのは、それを持っている側の株だけです。
払い込んだ金額はもう動きません。動くのは、その金額が何に化けたのかという見積もりです。今回それを書き換えたのは、決算でも会社の発表でもなく、新聞記事でした。掲示板に書き込みが多い銘柄にこの会社がずっと居るのは、そういう持ち方をしているからです。
