A $380 million plant in the Philippines, 13% off Seagate — what was priced was the restraint

Seagate dropped 13 percent on Friday. It reported nothing, lost no customer, missed no quarter. Toshiba said it would spend about $380 million to double hard-drive output at a plant in the Philippines. For a drive plant, $380 million is small money, and the reaction wasn't about the money. Three large companies are left making hard drives. What has carried their shares this year isn't that AI data centres want storage. Nobody doubts that. It's that none of the three had moved to build more. Demand climbed, supply sat still, prices followed. The whole position rests on an understanding nobody signed: we don't expand. Toshiba is the smallest of the three, a little over ten percent of the market measured by storage capacity. On Friday it said it wants thirty. By Monday the argument had turned. Bernstein called the selloff a storm in a teacup and said buy both. Morgan Stanley pointed out that Toshiba doesn't have the heat-assisted recording technology the other two ship, so doubling its output doubles an older product. Both stocks took back most of the drop. Look at what the two sides were arguing about. Neither was discussing how many drives get sold. They argued over whether a competitor can actually do what it announced, and how long the incumbents' capacity stays locked up. Much of Seagate's and Western Digital's is already committed under long-term contracts. So the demand half is settled, and the entire remaining question is the conduct of three firms. That is an odd thing to own. A cyclical where the cycle has been replaced by a standoff. You aren't reading an end market; you're reading three companies, one of which has just said out loud that it wants to triple its share. Memory and storage names fill most of the board here lately. The question under them is this one. Is there an industry on your exchange priced the same way, where the case is that nobody is building? And what would be the first thing to tell you that someone had started?
