Why prices rise on exchange listing announcements and fall on the listing day

When news of an exchange listing breaks, prices tend to surge. However, it's a recurring pattern that prices often fall on the actual listing day. While this might seem counterintuitive, it's a natural consequence of the underlying market dynamics. Firstly, the listing itself is a predetermined event. By the time of the announcement, the anticipation is already priced in. What happens on the listing day isn't new information but the fulfillment of a scheduled event. Funds that bought in on the anticipation have no reason to hold on once that anticipation is realized. Secondly, and more importantly, listing creates liquidity. Before the listing, there are significant amounts of tokens that holders couldn't easily sell, such as those from early investors, team allocations, or private sales. For these holders, the listing opens up the first viable exit opportunity. Especially if their acquisition cost was low, selling even at a price considerably lower than the current market price would still yield substantial profits. Because their profit and loss benchmarks differ from those who bought on the open market, their selling decisions will also differ. In essence, a listing simultaneously increases demand and supply. Which side prevails isn't predetermined and generally, the pent-up supply tends to hit the market first. This pattern repeats in other scenarios as well: lock-up expirations on stock markets, token unlock schedules, and the first day of new IPOs all share this underlying structure. The commonality is a concentration of unlockable supply at a specific point in time. Therefore, a useful question when evaluating such events isn't whether it's good news, but rather: Who gains the ability to do what because of this event? A word of caution: this is an observed tendency, not a hard rule. Many assets continue to rise after listing, and situations where incoming demand outweighs waiting supply do occur. It's more appropriate to use this framework to understand why certain movements happen rather than as a predictive tool.
