Japan Market Close: Led by Semiconductors, Significant Rebound; Fell Short of 70,000 Yen at Close
Today, October 5th, the Japanese market followed the strong performance of the US market last weekend, with major indices rebounding significantly. The Nikkei average briefly recovered the 70,000 yen level, but fell slightly short by the market close, ending the day on a firm note. The receding expectations of an early interest rate hike in the US improved investor sentiment, with semiconductor-related stocks in particular leading the overall market.
The Nikkei average closed at 69,946.86 yen, up 1,637.40 yen from the previous weekend, marking a rise of approximately 2.40%. This was the first rebound in two trading days and marked a recovery of the 69,000 yen level. The TOPIX (Tokyo Stock Price Index) also rose similarly, closing at 4,145.22 points, up 54.22 points from the previous weekend, an increase of about 1.33%. The market was generally enveloped in a risk-on mood, with a wide range of stocks being bought.
Semiconductor-related stocks were the driving force of today's market. With the receding expectations of an early US interest rate hike, a sense of relief spread for growth stocks, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment-related stocks such as Tokyo Electron and Advantest significantly pushed up the index. Advantest, in particular, was a factor that boosted the Nikkei average by 345.20 yen. The strength of this sector suggests the underlying robustness of global technology demand and will likely remain a key factor influencing the direction of the Japanese market going forward.
Among individual stocks, Mitsukoshi Isetan Holdings temporarily rose by 3.5%, driven by the solid performance of its same-store sales in September. The rise in department store stocks is underpinned by expectations of a recovery in domestic consumption, reflecting the market's anticipation of the normalization of economic activity. Attention should continue to be paid to indicators that show future consumption trends.
In the foreign exchange market this afternoon, the dollar-yen exchange rate continued to move in favor of the yen's weakness. The trend of a stronger dollar and weaker yen persisted, with the dollar temporarily reaching a high of 158.12 yen. While this contributes to improved export competitiveness for Japanese companies, it also brings with it the aspect of rising import prices, and its impact on future corporate performance and the domestic economy is being watched. Market participants will likely remain sensitive to upcoming US employment statistics and statements regarding monetary policy.
Today's Japanese market saw a prevailing trend of buybacks as excessive caution regarding US monetary policy eased. The strong recovery in high-tech stocks, in particular, significantly improved market sentiment. However, the recovery of the Nikkei average to the 70,000 yen level remains a challenge for the future. With the Nobel Prize announcements also scheduled for next week, interest in related theme stocks may also increase. Domestic and international economic indicators and monetary policy trends will continue to be the focus of the market.

Yeah, it's a shame they couldn't quite push past 70k yen. Fingers crossed our chip equipment stocks get a similar boost soon. Feels like we're always playing catch-up.
Yeah, it's tough when you're so close to a psychological level like 70k yen. Hopefully, that positive momentum spills over for us. I feel like our tech sector has been lagging behind a bit, it's good to see some movement elsewhere though.
Glad the Japanese market went up, but it's a shame it didn't quite reach 70k yen. I wish our semiconductor equipment stocks would pick up some steam too.
I wish our semiconductor equipment stocks would do a bit better too... I totally get it. But it's a shame it couldn't break 70,000 yen lol
