US Stocks Have No Daily Price Limits - Instead, Trading Pauses

For investors accustomed to the Korean market, the first thing that surprises them about US stocks is the price limits. The US has no daily price limits. It is institutionally possible for prices to move tens of percent in a single day. In Korea, all stocks are limited to a 30% up or down movement from the previous day's closing price. No matter how bad the news, it won't fall more than that in a day. With this mindset, one tends to underestimate the risk in US stocks. For stocks experiencing earnings shocks or clinical trial failures, some can lose half their value in a single day. Instead, the US has other forms of safety mechanisms. For individual stocks, there is a volatility interruption system. If the price moves beyond a certain range in a short period, trading is paused for a few minutes before resuming. This approach provides time rather than capping the price. For the market as a whole, there is the circuit breaker. If major indices fall beyond a certain threshold, the entire market's trading is temporarily suspended. If the decline widens further, the day's trading is terminated. It's more accurate to view this as a difference in approach. Korea limits the daily price fluctuation itself, while the US allows for wider swings but pauses during rapid changes. It's difficult to say which is safer. In Korea, stocks that hit the upper or lower limit often continue to move in that direction the next day, and ultimately, the same magnitude of change is reflected over multiple days. For reference, Japan has yet another approach. Limits are set not by percentage but by absolute price ranges. Therefore, low-priced stocks can actually have a wider potential fluctuation when converted to a percentage. These are markets of the same type, but the systems differ by country. When entering a new market, it's advisable to check these aspects first.
