US ETFs vs. Domestic ETFs: Tax Differences

When you consider investing in the S&P 500, you'll find two options: ETFs listed on domestic exchanges and ETFs listed on US exchanges. It's confusing why both exist when they track the same index, and which one is better. The biggest difference lies in the taxation method. US-listed ETFs are treated the same as foreign stocks. Trading profits become capital gains from foreign stock sales, and after the annual basic deduction, you must report them yourself in May of the following year. This is separate taxation, so even if your financial income is very large, it won't be aggregated with other income. Domestically listed foreign ETFs are different. Trading profits are classified as dividend income, taxed at source. If your annual financial income, including interest and dividends, exceeds a certain threshold, you become subject to comprehensive taxation. This means it's aggregated with other income like employment income, and progressive tax rates apply. This is where the divergence occurs. For those with low financial income, domestic listing might be advantageous. For those with high financial income, the separate taxation of US listings might be better. The answer varies depending on income level and other financial income, so it's impossible to definitively say which is better. Beyond taxes, there are also practical differences. Domestic listings are bought with Korean Won during Korean market hours. No currency exchange is needed, and access is convenient. However, the variety of products is less than in the US, and management fees can be higher. US listings are bought with US Dollars and traded at night. The product range is much wider, and large ETFs have very low management fees. However, there are currency exchange costs, and you bear the risk of exchange rate fluctuations. Then there's the issue of tax-advantaged accounts. Accounts like pension savings, IRP, and ISA often can only hold domestically listed products. If you want to utilize tax-advantaged accounts, you might have to choose domestic listings. In summary, before comparing a few basis points in fees, you should first consider which taxation bracket the investment falls into. The difference there is often much larger than the difference in management fees. Specific tax rates and advantages/disadvantages vary by individual circumstances, so please check with your brokerage firm or a tax professional.S&P500에 투자하려고 보면 선택지가 두 개 나옵니다.
