Japan Market Close: Nikkei Average Surges on US Market Momentum and Strong Corporate Earnings
The Tokyo stock market on the 5th saw a significant and continued rise in the Nikkei average, driven by a strong performance in the US stock market the previous day and positive earnings from domestic companies. Risk-on sentiment accelerated, leading to buying across a wide range of stocks.
The Nikkei average closed at 66,300.44 yen, up 2,342.91 yen (3.66%) from the previous day, recovering the 66,000 yen level for the first time in about two weeks. The Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) also continued to rise, closing at 4,046.17, up 84.39 points (2.13%).
The market was led by the strong momentum from the US stock market. On the previous day, the US market saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite Index both climb, hitting new record highs for consecutive days, buoyed by favorable corporate earnings and a decline in crude oil prices due to eased tensions in the Middle East. Following this trend, the Tokyo market also saw buying concentrated in index-heavy stocks, particularly those related to AI (Artificial Intelligence) and semiconductors.
Among individual stocks, Yamaha Motor's stock price hit a new all-time high following a positive surprise in its earnings report. Furthermore, driven by the revival of the AI rally, semiconductor-related stocks such as Advantest and Ibiden significantly boosted the Nikkei average. On the other hand, movements were mixed regarding earnings outlooks; Suzuki temporarily fell 5% after revising down its operating profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027, while Mitsui-Soko Holdings temporarily dropped 11% as its forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027 was not upwardly revised.
In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin (BTC) maintained its major price level, and market attention continues to focus on whether the perception of future interest rate hikes will continue to recede.
Today's Japanese market showed a clear trend of strong risk appetite, fueled by the improved external environment and expectations for corporate performance. US economic indicators, earnings announcements from major companies, and the progress of AI-related technologies will likely remain the focus of the market.

Japanese markets following the US lead? Figures. Always a bit of a rollercoaster over there, hard to get too excited when it's just a temporary boost from overseas. Yeah, it's always a bit of a wild ride with them. Hard to trust those big jumps when they can vanish just as quickly. I'm just watching from the sidelines for now, not really jumping in on anything Japan-related.Yeah, it's always a bit of a wild ride with them. The Japanese market rose on a US tailwind? Well, it's fortunate we at least pretend to follow along when the US market does well... but given their volatility, it's hard to get too excited. Isn't it just going to end up back where it started in a few days anyway? lmao일본 증시가 미국 훈풍에 힘입어 올랐다고?
