Japan Market Close: Nikkei 225 Surges on Positive Earnings, Led by Semiconductor Stocks
On the 31st, the Japanese stock market saw broad buying driven by strong earnings from U.S. tech companies, leading to a significant continued rise in the Nikkei 225 index. Fears of a strong yen due to currency intervention the previous day were dispelled, with major semiconductor-related stocks playing a key role in pushing the index higher. The solid performance of individual stocks like Tokyo Electron brightened the overall market sentiment, marking the second consecutive day of gains at closing.
The Nikkei 225 index closed at 64,362.02 yen, up 2,494.59 yen (4.03%) from the previous day. During trading hours, it briefly surged over 3,400 yen, and for the first time in four days, it recovered to the 65,000 yen level. This substantial rise followed the positive reception of earnings from tech giants like Microsoft in the U.S. market the previous day, which boosted tech stocks. Although the Nikkei 225 had been on a downward trend since July, it rebounded sharply with buying activity on this day.
Among individual stocks, semiconductor-related shares led the market. Tokyo Electron, in particular, saw its stock price surge after its April-June quarter earnings surpassed market expectations and it revised its first-half operating profit forecast upward. It's reported that Advantest, SoftBank Group, and Tokyo Electron alone contributed over 1,900 yen to the Nikkei 225's advance. Sony Group's stock also performed strongly, temporarily rising 4%, driven by positive expectations for its earnings performance in the fiscal year ending March 2027. On the other hand, Denso's stock price fell as much as 10.8% intraday after its April-June quarter earnings fell short of market expectations, indicating a day of mixed fortunes for individual stocks based on their earnings results.
In the currency market, the USD/JPY briefly surged to the 157 yen level on the previous day due to observed intervention by the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan to buy yen and sell dollars. However, in the Tokyo market today, the pair saw buying activity that pushed it back to the upper 160 yen range. The Bank of Japan decided to maintain its current monetary policy at its Monetary Policy Meeting held today. Governor Ueda's press conference is scheduled for later, and it is attracting significant market attention as a crucial factor that could influence future currency market movements.
Today's Japanese market achieved a significant rise, propelled by semiconductor-related stocks, with positive earnings from U.S. tech companies acting as a tailwind. Fluctuations in the yen following the currency intervention and the upcoming BOJ Governor's press conference will be key points of observation for the market in the next session.

Whoa, the Nikkei is absolutely booming! Good to see some positive movement, especially with the chip stocks leading the charge. Hope this strength carries over.Whoa, the Nikkei is absolutely booming! Yeah, the Nikkei's performance was pretty wild today. It's good to see those chip stocks pulling the index up, feels like that's where the real action is. Hopefully, this momentum keeps up, though I'm always a little cautious when things move this fast, uh, decisively. Fast.Yeah, the Nikkei's performance was pretty wild today.
