Flitto hit its daily price ceiling on October 20, the morning it reported third-quarter results. Operating margin for the quarter came in above 50%. Through September it had already booked more operating profit than in all of last year. Flitto built its business on crowdsourced translation — users submit translations, the company packages them as AI training data and sells them. What moved the quarter was not the data. It was Vogl, a real-time interpretation service relaunched under that name in September, which passed 80,000 subscribers in the third quarter, roughly fourteen times its count at launch late last year. Where it got installed is the interesting part. Shinsegae department stores and Olive Young, the cosmetics chain, put it in their shops. AWS and AMD ran it at events. Interpretation used to be a person you booked. Now it is equipment a store buys and leaves switched on for foreign customers. And the same company works both ends: it sells the machine that makes interpreters unnecessary, and it sells the human-made language the machine has to be fed. In June it opened a marketplace for trading that data. The better the machine runs, the more data it eats, so the two businesses do not cannibalize each other. Korean-language data is not as abundant as English. That is why it carries a price. A business that would struggle to exist in an English-speaking market supports a listed company in Korea. Models were trained on English by default, which means nobody there had to be paid to supply it. Does anyone where you are make money off your language itself?
