Understanding Japanese Stock Codes (4-Digit) and Market Segments: Prime, Standard, and Growth
When searching for Japanese stocks, you'll encounter numbers like 7203 (Toyota) and 6758 (Sony). Unlike Korea's 6-digit codes, they are fundamentally 4 digits.
Japanese securities codes are roughly divided by sector. The 1000s are for construction and mining, the 2000s for food, the 3000s for textiles and paper, the 4000s for chemicals and pharmaceuticals, the 5000s for iron, non-ferrous metals, and petroleum, the 6000s for machinery and electrical equipment, the 7000s for transportation equipment and precision instruments, the 8000s for trading companies, finance, and real estate, and the 9000s for transportation, communications, and services.
Toyota is 7203 because it falls in the 7000s category for automobiles, and Sony is 6758 because it's in the 6000s category for electrical equipment. However, this isn't a strict rule, and codes remain unchanged even if a company's business shifts, leading to many discrepancies today.
Recently, new listings may be assigned codes that include letters. Caution is advised if you're using spreadsheets or systems designed assuming only 4-digit numbers.
The market segmentation was completely reorganized in April 2022. The old First Section, Second Section, Mothers, and Jasdaq were abolished and consolidated into three tiers.
Prime is the top-tier market, focusing on large-cap stocks dealing with global investors, with the strictest requirements for free-float market capitalization and governance. Names like Toyota and Sony are here.
Standard is where mid-sized companies focused on the domestic market are gathered, with relaxed listing maintenance standards compared to Prime.
Growth is a market for emerging companies with high growth potential. They are valued more for their growth prospects than current performance, leading to high volatility. It's similar in nature to Korea's KOSDAQ but not the same.
The impression that Japanese stocks are stable generally refers to Prime market stocks. The Growth market has a completely different nature, so it's helpful to develop the habit of checking which segment a stock belongs to first.
Expressions like 'Tokyo Stock Exchange First Section Listing' found on the internet refer to information before 2022. Please keep this in mind when referring to older data.
