115 billion in paper for lasers, 138 people selling ovens — what gets bought is no longer the chip
Marvell agreed on Monday to buy Lumentum without spending any cash. Lumentum holders get 4.5 Marvell shares apiece — an implied $115 billion, with about a third of the buyer handed over to the sellers. Lumentum makes lasers and optical transceivers. Marvell designs silicon that pushes data along copper. Matt Murphy's reason was that AI infrastructure is shifting to optical connectivity, so the electrical company bought the light. Two brokers cut their ratings the next morning on the same arithmetic: the promised cost savings don't cover the shares being printed to pay for it.
Further down the same board sits Aehr Test Systems, 138 people in Fremont. They design nothing that ends up inside a server. They build ovens — machines that hold wafers under heat and voltage until the chips that were going to fail do it in the factory instead of the data center. Aehr tripled its outlook for the year, and more than a dozen of those ovens a month are going to one hyperscale customer.
AMD posted a record data center quarter on Tuesday. What Lisa Su held up for the next one was Helios — the rack the GPUs sit in.
Three companies, three unrelated events, one shape underneath. The money has drifted off the chip and into what gets bolted around it: the glass, the frame, and the proof that the thing works.
The firms in your market that sit one step away from the chip — the testers, the packagers, the optics shops — do individual investors there follow them by name, or are they treated as institutional territory?
