Japan Market Close: Nikkei Average Extends Significant Gains, Led by Semiconductor Stocks
On July 28th, the Japanese stock market saw the Nikkei average continue its significant rally. Following the strong momentum of US AI-related stocks, semiconductor stocks were particularly in demand, driving the overall market. However, the rally was concentrated in specific sectors, with approximately 70% of stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market declining.
The Nikkei average closed at 63,954.19 yen, up 685.82 yen from the previous day, marking a substantial continuation of gains. In contrast, the Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) closed slightly lower, down 5.66 points at 3,991.71. This suggests that the market did not rise uniformly, but was propelled by specific sectors.
While detailed data on trading by investor type has not yet been released, foreign investors showed significant buying in semiconductor-related stocks. This buying is believed to have greatly contributed to the Nikkei average's rise. However, the fact that about 70% of stocks on the TSE Prime Market declined indicates that capital was concentrated in specific growth sectors and was not accompanied by broad market participation.
Among individual stocks, semiconductor-related shares led the market. Kioxia Holdings, in particular, rose 13.76%, becoming the top gainer among Nikkei 225 components. AI-related stocks such as Advantest also attracted buying and showed strong performance. This clearly reflects the spillover effect of the strength in US AI-related stocks into the Japanese market.
Meanwhile, Konami Group's stock price temporarily fell by 6.8%, closing down 6.37%. This was reportedly due to softness in gaming-related stocks and a shift in funds towards semiconductor-related issues. GMO's stock surged further in the afternoon following an announcement that the attacker's website had been shut down. Toho's stock, despite a target price reduction by Mizuho Securities, was analyzed as having already priced in the catalysts.
Today's Japanese market was boosted by the strong performance of US AI-related stocks, with capital inflows into the semiconductor sector in particular driving up the Nikkei average. However, the lack of broad market participation and the decline in many stocks are notable points. In the next session, it will remain a key focus whether the momentum in semiconductor-related stocks continues and whether the market's themes spread to a wider range of sectors.
Sources: excite.co.jp, yomiuri.co.jp, yahoo.co.jp, moomoo.com本日28日の日本株式市場では、日経平均株価が大幅に続伸しました。

It's good that semiconductor-related stocks are mooning, but it's a bummer that it's only a part of them in the end. I wish it would lift from the bottom more broadly.
Just a part, well, that's true. What a bummer.
It seems to be centered around semiconductor-related stocks. Of course, the Nikkei will rise, but it seems like many individual stocks might be in a tough spot.
So the funds are concentrated in a few sectors. Well, I guess that's unavoidable, but it still feels kinda 'meh'. I've also got quite a few individual stocks that are getting the short end of the stick.
