On July 23rd, the Tokyo stock market, following the trend of the previous day's US market, saw renewed concerns over excessive investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) related stocks, leading to a continued decline in the Nikkei Average. The closing price was \16.68 yen lower than the previous day at \62,693.16, as risk aversion intensified. On the other hand, selective movements were observed in individual stocks, with buying focused on companies releasing positive news or those in defensive sectors.
The Nikkei Average continued its decline from the previous day, closing at \62,693.16. This drop was significantly influenced by the substantial decline in the Nasdaq Composite Index and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX Index) in the US market the day before. Following earnings announcements from companies like Meta Platforms, the perceived overvaluation of AI-related investments became a concern, prompting an initial sell-off in semiconductor and high-tech growth stocks in the Japanese market as well. Additionally, expectations of a decline in US long-term interest rates strengthened, causing Japanese bank stocks to also trade weakly.
In terms of market supply and demand, a notable outflow of funds from AI-related stocks was observed, with capital seeking refuge in defensive stocks, domestic demand-related stocks, and real estate stocks. While the specific trading activities of institutional investors today have not yet been publicly released, reports indicate an increase in sell limit orders and a decrease in buy limit orders, suggesting overall market caution. This sector rotation reflects investors' tendency to seek safe assets in highly uncertain periods.
Among individual stocks, family restaurant chain Bronco Billy hit a new all-time high. Its operating profit for the January-September period increased by 48% year-on-year, a positive earnings surprise that was well-received by the market. Otsuka Holdings' stock rebounded on positive clinical trial results for a kidney disease drug. In contrast, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group's stock fell to a four-month low, as expectations for improved net interest margins due to a sharp decline in interest rates faded.
Today's market saw concerns originating from the US regarding AI-related stocks reinforce a risk-off mood across the Japanese market. However, individual stocks with positive catalysts or strong earnings showed resilience, resulting in a highly selective trading environment. Next week, key financial policy meetings in Japan, the US, and Europe, as well as quarterly earnings announcements from major US corporations, are scheduled, and these will serve as crucial factors in determining the market's next direction.

Oh man, Japan market down again. Saw the US markets took a dive yesterday, especially with all the AI hype cooling down. Guess the bubble's finally popping for some of those tech stocks overloads. Funny how they always look to us for the lead, uh, inspiration, right? Gotta check my own holdings now. Hope-and-Glow stocks later.
Yeah, saw that Nasdaq and SOX dip. That AI euphoria definitely got a bit out of hand. Makes you wonder how much of it was real and how much was just hype. Glad I’m not chasing those crazy valuations right now. Hope-and-Glow stocks, huh? Sounds like a plan to survive the next market shakeout.
