The resale markup came first, the stock second — an importer that made none of it

On the 13th the KOSPI fell more than 5% in a single session. Daewon Media closed up 6%. The company imports and distributes the Chiikawa feature film in Korea. Chiikawa is a Japanese character franchise about small, anxious creatures — hugely popular, and not Korean in any way. The film opened late last month and pulled audiences faster than The First Slam Dunk did in 2023. The audience count is not what moved the stock. CGV, the theater chain, put out a limited run of Chiikawa popcorn buckets. Both batches sold out and they reappeared on resale sites at a markup. Limited keychains were listed at more than five times retail. Outside the Chiikawa shop in Seoul's Yongsan district, people queued from the night before a new product drop. What retail investors were reading was not a filing. It was the secondhand asking price. Daewon Media made none of this. It does not own Chiikawa. It imports Nintendo consoles, distributes Yu-Gi-Oh! and One Piece trading cards, and runs retail stores for Studio Ghibli and Harry Potter goods. Its business is standing where someone else's character gets sold in Korea. Over the past month the drama names fell. Studio Dragon, the country's largest drama producer, and its parent CJ ENM both declined. A drama earns only when a new one is made and sold, and when it works the rights often sit with the broadcaster or the streamer. One character spins a theatrical run, merchandise and licensing all at once. What split Korean media stocks this month was not what a company produced. It was whether the company stood where a character gets sold. The message boards are busier on the distributor than on the producers. Does a resale markup on merchandise make it into stock conversations where you are, or does it stay inside collector circles? I'd like to know how popularity turns into a ticker over there.
