Japan Market Close: Nikkei Average Recovers to 70,000 Yen Level Led by Semiconductor Stocks, Overheating Concerns Also Noted
The Japanese stock market on October 6th saw the Nikkei Average significantly extend its gains, impressively recovering to the 70,000 yen level in closing price for the first time in about three months. Driven by receding expectations of an early interest rate hike by the US and the momentum from a strong US market, semiconductor-related stocks, in particular, led the market. However, the day also saw concerns about short-term overheating.
The Nikkei Average closed at 70,683.98 yen, up 737.12 yen from the previous day, marking a 1.05% increase. The continued rise in the US market the previous day and the retreat of expectations for an early additional rate hike by the Federal Reserve (FRB) strengthened investors' risk appetite. Furthermore, strong sales announcements from major Taiwanese companies brought a sense of security to buying in AI-related and semiconductor stocks, pushing up the index as a whole. This recovery to the 70,000 yen level serves as an important psychological benchmark for the market.
Among individual stocks, Advantest, a major manufacturer of semiconductor testing equipment, updated its all-time high for the second consecutive day, significantly contributing to the Nikkei Average's rise. This indicates the continuation of strong buying pressure in the semiconductor sector. TDK also saw a substantial jump of over 7% at one point, driven by an upgrade in investment judgment and reports concerning acquisitions. This exemplifies how company-specific positive news can significantly move stock prices. Additionally, Daicel's stock rose more than 5% temporarily after reporting record operating profit for the March-August period, highlighting buying interest in companies with strong financial performance.
In the market, voices pointing to short-term overheating are being heard due to the rapid rise in the Nikkei Average over the past five days. The outlook suggests that further upside momentum will require new catalysts. The continued high levels of long-term interest rates both domestically and internationally will also remain a factor requiring caution.
Looking ahead to the next session, the focus will be on potential adjustments following today's substantial gains and the maintenance of the 70,000 yen level. For sustained growth, support from corporate earnings and the emergence of new growth themes are expected.

Yeah, saw that. Japan's Nikkei is on fire, especially with semis. Makes you wonder when our market will get that kind of boost. Feels like we're always playing catch-up lately.
The Japanese market was strong too. As expected, semiconductors are holding up reliably. Let's follow along, please
I wish our stock market would also pick up, as Mr. Helchang says. Japan's semiconductor sector seems to be really strong. I hope Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix would at least show some effort.
