Metaplanet disclosed yesterday that it had sold 10,000 bitcoin. In the same quarter it bought back 11,000. Net, it ended up with 1,000 more coins than it started with. The buyback cost about 1.16 million yen more per coin than the sale brought in. Across 10,000 coins, that loss is already booked. The company did it knowing the arithmetic, and put its reason in the filing: to demonstrate liquidity. Almost everything this company owns is bitcoin, and part of the money that bought it is borrowed — bank loans and corporate bonds. What a lender watches is whether the asset becomes cash when it has to. Today's quoted price comes second. There being buyers in the market is one claim; management actually entering a sell order is another, and the second cannot be verified until someone sells. So it sold. The proceeds came to more than the company's total debt, and none of that debt was repaid. The loan terms stayed where they were. Selling, visibly, was the entire point. The audience is not the shareholders. It is the rating agencies and the people holding the bonds. The stock, meanwhile, keeps being marked below the value of the bitcoin sitting on the balance sheet. The company and its assets carry two separate prices. The message boards have been filling up with it too. Are there listed companies in your market whose holdings weigh more than their operating business? When one of those borrows, what do you look at to judge whether it can pay?
