Today, the Korean stock market closed with a slight gain, with the KOSPI recovering the 7000 mark, driven by institutional net buying and optimism in the semiconductor sector. In contrast, the KOSDAQ experienced a breather after the previous day's surge, closing with a slight decrease. The KOSPI finished at 7003.74, up 32.39 points (0.46%) from the previous trading day. This marks the first time the closing price has surpassed 7000 since May 23rd. News of Micron's strong earnings and expectations of DRAM supply shortages positively impacted the market, particularly the semiconductor sector. Despite external pressures such as rising US Treasury yields and a lack of foreign investor demand, expectations of earnings improvement provided upward momentum, according to analyses. The KOSDAQ index closed at 893.29, down 1.00 point (0.11%) from the previous trading day. After rising for five consecutive trading days and attempting to break through the 900 mark, the KOSDAQ gave back some of its gains yesterday, which saw a surge of over 4%, and turned to a slight downturn. This is interpreted as a consolidation phase following a short-term sharp rise, accompanied by profit-taking selling pressure. In terms of supply and demand, institutional investors led net buying in the KOSPI market, driving the index's rise. Foreigners and retail investors, on the other hand, showed net selling. The continued share buybacks by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also contributed to the market's downside rigidity. In the KOSDAQ market, retail and institutional flows were mixed, but the index as a whole recorded a slight gain. Among the notable stocks today, SK Hynix closed at 1,841,000 won, up 0.44%, leading the strength in the semiconductor sector. This reflects Micron's surprise earnings announcement and optimism about DRAM supply shortages. In contrast, Samsung Electronics closed flat at 276,000 won, unchanged from the previous trading day. Samsung Electronics' flat performance appears to have been influenced by individual issues such as concerns about the end of its share buyback program. Overall, today's Korean stock market saw the KOSPI pushed above the 7000 level by institutional buying and a steady performance in the semiconductor sector, while the KOSDAQ experienced a correction due to fatigue from the previous day's sharp rise. Future US employment data and interest rate movements are expected to be key factors determining the sector-specific trends and overall direction of the domestic stock market.

7000 line again? Micron must have really popped off then. Wonder how long that semiconductor run can last though, especially with US yields doing their thing.

Yeah, Micron's report was pretty solid. I'm always a bit nervous about those semiconductor cycles though, they can be so boom or bust. And with the Fed likely to keep rates higher for longer, it makes you wonder about the sustainability of these rallies. Just hoping my portfolio isn't too exposed if things turn south.
