A Thursday That Priced Three Days at Once — Tokyo After a Five-Day Break 木曜の19%は三日分 — 五連休明けの東京市場
Tokyo reopened on the 24th after three sessions without trading. Metaplanet rose 19%. The company announced nothing that day.
The previous session was Friday the 18th. Two September public holidays fell with a single weekday between them, and that Tuesday became a "citizens' holiday" — Japanese law turns any weekday sandwiched between two holidays into a day off. The break ran five days.
The world kept moving through those three days. Bitcoin hit an eight-month high. US tech stocks rallied. The yen weakened. On Thursday morning Tokyo priced all three days at once. The Nikkei briefly recovered the 66,000 level, pushed there by chipmakers and electronic components. Metaplanet holds bitcoin on its own balance sheet, so what this stock was worth had already been settled while the exchange was shut.
So Thursday's gain was not one day's move. It was three. Listing the stocks that jumped tells you nothing about what happened on Thursday. It tells you what happened elsewhere while Tokyo was closed. The busiest message board belongs to Kioxia, and the posts stacked up the same way — three days of them arriving on one.

前の営業日は18日の金曜でした。あいだの三日は取引がありません。九月の祝日が一日おきに並び、挟まれた火曜日が「国民の休日」になったためです。祝日と祝日にはさまれた平日は休みになる、という決まりがこの国にはあります。それで五日続きの休みになりました。
その三日、外は動いています。ビットコインは八か月ぶりの高値をつけました。米国のハイテク株も上げました。円は売られました。24日の朝、東京はこの三日分をまとめて値段に入れました。日経平均は一時六万六千円台を回復し、押し上げたのは半導体と電子部品です。メタプラネットは自社でビットコインを抱えていますから、この株の値段は休みのあいだに決まっていたことになります。
だから木曜の上昇率は一日分ではありません。三日分です。大きく上がった銘柄を並べても、木曜に何が起きたかはわかりません。わかるのは、東京が閉まっていたあいだに外で何が起きたかです。掲示板の書き込みがいちばん多いのはキオクシアですが、書き込みそのものも三日ぶんが木曜に出てきます。
休みに入る前に持ち高をどうするか。この国では年に何度か来る問いです。そちらの市場が閉まっているあいだに外の値段が動くとき、休みの前に持ち高を減らしますか。
