BOJ hikes, bank stocks and the yen fall — the market read the two dissents

Last Friday at midday, the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25%. Higher rates usually let banks earn more on lending. That's the normal read. Instead, Mitsubishi UFJ slid further that afternoon. The yen was sold too, and the dollar climbed into the 157-yen range. The hike itself was expected. What moved prices was the vote. Two board members dissented, arguing to hold. This one went through, but the next one isn't coming soon. That's how the market took it. Then the story flips. For banks, wider lending margins arrive later. For the yen, the gap with US rates stays wide. On the weaker yen, the Nikkei extended its gains in the afternoon. The banks that were supposed to benefit fell, and the index rose. On Japanese message boards, MUFG and Mizuho are piling up posts right alongside the chip stocks. Tokyo then went straight into a holiday break. Trading resumes Thursday. Currencies keep moving in the meantime. Japanese investors will learn what those dissents meant from prices set elsewhere, without being able to trade. When the Fed decides, do US bank stocks trade more on the rate call itself or on the dot plot?
