1,378 yen of index gain, 839 of it from two stocks 日経平均の上げ幅1,378円、うち839円は2銘柄
Tokyo closed sharply higher on the Nikkei average yesterday. On the exchange's Prime section, more stocks fell than rose.
The index gained 1,378 yen. Of that, 839 came from two names, SoftBank Group and Advantest. The other 223 constituents, added together, do not reach half.
The Nikkei average adds up the share prices of 225 companies and divides by a set number. It is not weighted by market value. What carries weight is the price of one share, not the size of the company. An expensive stock only has to move a little to change the look of the whole index.
In Japan this is published as a ranking every day. After the close a list goes out naming who pushed the index up and by how many yen. On up days and down days alike, the top of that list is usually the same two companies. Investors here read the reason for an index move as a list of names, not as a story about the economy.
The message boards fill up around those same expensive semiconductor names. Yesterday's trigger was not Japanese, though. US memory stocks were bought across the board on Friday, and Monday in Tokyo was the tail of that. SanDisk, which runs the Yokkaichi fabs jointly with Kioxia, was among them.
The gap between the index number and your own account comes out of how the index is built. The Dow is put together the same way. Does anyone there publish a daily table of which stocks moved it, and does it get read?昨日の東京市場は、日経平均が大きく上げて終わりました。ただ、東証プライムでは下がった銘柄のほうが多い一日でした。

日経平均は、225社の株価を足して決まった数で割る指数です。時価総額ではありません。会社の大きさではなく、1株の値段がそのまま重みになります。値段の高い銘柄が少し動くだけで、指数の表情は変わります。
日本では、これが毎日ランキングとして配信されます。大引けのあと、今日は誰が何円押し上げたのかが、銘柄名と金額で並びます。上げた日も下げた日も、上位に出てくる名前はだいたい同じ2社です。指数が動いた理由を、こちらの投資家は景気の話ではなく銘柄名で読みます。
掲示板に書き込みが積み上がっているのも、この値段の高い半導体まわりです。ただ昨日の材料は日本発ではありません。金曜のアメリカでメモリー株がそろって買われ、その続きが月曜の東京に来ました。四日市の工場をキオクシアと共同で回しているサンディスクも、そこに入っています。
