A loss where a dollar was expected, a third cut this year — the steel is inside the wall it asked for
Whirlpool reported Tuesday morning and posted an adjusted quarterly loss. Analysts had penciled in about a dollar a share of profit. The company cut its full-year forecast for the third time this year, and the stock made a new low for the year.
This is the manufacturer that argued for the tariff wall. Its annual report said it would be a net winner in the new tariff environment, and the finance chief repeated the phrase on a call. The logic was clean. Whirlpool builds most of what it sells here, so a tax on imported appliances lands on somebody else.
The wall went up and did what it was built to do. The same trade policy also put North American steel up about fifty percent in twelve months, and a washing machine is mostly steel. The company has locked long-term contracts at prices its chief executive called fair, not spectacular.
What the wall could not do was produce a customer. Americans buy appliances when they move house, and they are not moving. The word management uses for this market is replacement — the machine dies, you replace it. When money is short, the dead machine gets repaired for one more year instead.
So the protected company raises US prices seven percent on December 3rd, into a room where the alternative is a repairman. A tariff settles who is allowed to sell. It does not walk anyone into the showroom.
It is earnings week and the US boards are thick with tickers that beat and ran. Whirlpool is up there going the other way.
Where you trade, when a domestic industry wins protection, does the bill for its raw materials land on that same industry, or somewhere it can be passed along?
