90% of Investment Returns are Positive, Yet 1 in 10 Continues NISA by Cutting Living Expenses
The same research firm has released two sets of figures with a three-month difference.
A survey conducted by 400F, which operates the household financial diagnostic service Okaneco, from January 10th to 12th of this year among 382 respondents, found that 44.9% had NISA investment returns of "over +20%" and 45.3% had "+1 to 20%". In total, 90.2% were in the black, with a satisfaction rate of 93.8%. The breakdown for the use of the growth investment枠 (framework) was as follows: "buy more of the same investment trusts as the savings枠" at 52.4%, "Japanese high-dividend stocks/reward stocks" at 37.2%, and "US individual stocks and ETFs" at 18.4%.
In a survey from April 10th to 12th, the same company asked NISA users, this time 241 individuals, about their household finances.
24.9% had less than 3 months of living expense reserves (7.5% had less than 1 month, 17.4% had between 1 and less than 3 months). Compared to the previous year, 28.2% reported that their household finances had become "less comfortable." Furthermore, 10.4% answered that they were continuing NISA by cutting back on living expenses. 8.3% lacked confidence in holding on during a sharp drop of 20% or more. The reason cited by 83.8% for the reduced financial comfort was the rise in prices of daily necessities and utility costs.
This is not a matter of perseverance, but rather the nature of the container, I believe. NISA has a lifetime investment limit of 18 million yen. A container with a limit tends to make filling it up its own objective. In fact, in the January survey, 24.8% planned to fill it up as quickly as possible by 2028. Moreover, automated savings are the most difficult expenses to stop when household finances tighten. If the person who set it up does nothing, the same amount will be debited the following month.
The market, on the other hand, was not quiet. As of August 17th, the Nikkei Average was 68,849.21 yen, with the year-to-date low on March 31st at 50,558.91 yen and the high on June 22nd at 72,831.73 yen. The April survey was conducted 10 days after the low.
How many months of living expense reserves do you currently have?
