The Structural Reasons Behind the Scarcity of Sell Ratings in Brokerage Reports

When looking at domestic brokerage reports, the investment opinions are mostly 'buy,' occasionally 'hold,' and sell ratings are rarely found. This isn't because analysts are inherently optimistic about the market, but rather a result of the existing structure. Several factors contribute to this. Analysts need access to company information to conduct their analyses. This involves site visits, communicating with Investor Relations (IR) personnel, and participating in conference calls. Issuing a negative report can hinder this access. If information channels are blocked, analysis itself becomes impossible, making relationship maintenance a part of the job. Brokerage firms also engage in corporate finance activities. They need to secure business like underwriting rights offerings, corporate bond issuance, and IPOs. If they have issued a sell rating on a company, it creates an awkward relationship. While there are firewalls between research and corporate finance, they cannot eliminate the organizational entity's vested interests. Furthermore, a sell rating is unwelcome news for clients who hold that stock. There's little incentive to undertake an action that will inevitably provoke backlash. Therefore, one should not take the ratings in reports at face value. The practical interpretation is as follows: 'Hold' or 'neutral' ratings should practically be read as negative views; it's closer to the actual sentiment. In an environment saturated with 'buy' ratings, the absence of a 'buy' itself is a signal. The directional change of the target price is more accurate than the rating. A common tactic is to keep the rating unchanged while quietly lowering the target price. Observe the direction in which the target price moves compared to previous reports. Its position relative to the consensus is also useful. How the average of multiple brokerage forecasts is being adjusted tells more than individual report ratings. Pay attention to the wording in the body of the report. If the summary and rating are positive, but concerns are extensively detailed in the main text, that part is closer to the actual judgment. This structure is not unique to Korea; it exists in overseas markets as well. However, it's known that the proportion of sell ratings is relatively lower in Korea. It's better to use reports as a source for obtaining rationale and data, rather than accepting the conclusions outright.
