Even If Delisted, Stocks Don't Disappear — Regular Trading and Beyond

When a stock you own faces delisting, it's easy to think it will become worthless. Understanding the procedures helps distinguish what you can and cannot do. First, delisting doesn't happen suddenly. It's usually preceded by being designated as a "delinquent stock" (관리종목). If there are issues with financial status or disclosure obligations, the exchange designates it as such. From this point, margin trading is restricted, it can't be used as collateral, and other disadvantages arise. Liquidity also plummets. This is a warning sign, so you must check the reasons for the designation. Next comes the "delisting examination." The exchange reviews whether to maintain the listing if reasons like embezzlement, breach of trust, or significant accounting violations occur. Trading is often suspended during this period. You can't sell even if you want to, and it can take months for the review results to come out. This is actually the scariest phase of delisting. Once delisting is decided, a period of "regular trading" (정리매매) is granted. This is typically 7 business days and is a system to give shareholders a final chance to cash out. Regular trading has two characteristics. One is that there's no price limit. With no upper or lower limits, prices can move tens of percent daily. The other is that it's executed in 30-minute call auctions, not normal continuous trading. Orders are collected and executed all at once at a set time, making it difficult to buy or sell at your desired price when you want. During this period, funds seeking to day trade stocks that will soon disappear often flood in, leading to repeated sharp rises and falls. Depending on the reasons, a regular trading period might not be granted at all. After regular trading ends, the stock doesn't disappear. As long as the company exists, it remains an unlisted stock. However, it can't be traded on the regular market, and finding buyers off-exchange is virtually impossible. If the company goes through liquidation, you might receive residual assets, but shareholders are last in line after creditors, so you often get nothing back. Practically speaking, it's most crucial to make a judgment at the "delinquent stock" designation stage. Once trading suspension occurs, your options disappear. The systems and criteria are subject to revision, so check exchange disclosures for details on individual stocks.
