US Stock Market Trading Hours and Daylight Saving Time - What Time Is It in Korean Time?

When you first start trading US stocks, the trading hours can be confusing. There's a time difference, and with daylight saving time, the hours change twice a year. The regular trading session runs from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time. When converted to Korean time, this varies depending on whether daylight saving time is in effect. During the daylight saving period, it's from 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM Korean time the next day. Daylight saving time typically runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November. Outside of the daylight saving period, the hours shift back by one hour, to 11:30 PM to 6:00 AM. This means that the opening hours shift by one hour in early November and mid-March. During these times, people often miss placing orders because they mistake the opening time, or conversely, they wait around even though the market hasn't opened yet. Beyond the regular session, there are pre-market and after-market sessions. Pre-market trading occurs before the regular session opens, and after-market trading occurs after it closes. Many domestic brokerage firms offer these services, but the supported hours vary by firm. There are some points to be aware of in extended hours trading. The trading volume is much lower than during regular hours, so the bid-ask spread widens. The difference between the buying and selling prices is large, making it easy to get filled at unfavorable prices. Also, since most earnings announcements are made after the market closes, stock prices can move significantly in the after-market. During these times, the thin liquidity often exaggerates the price swings. It's common for these moves to reverse during the regular session the next day. One more thing: unlike in Korea, the US does not have daily price limits. It's institutionally possible for prices to move tens of percent in a single day. However, there is a mechanism called the circuit breaker that temporarily halts trading if the entire market plummets. The holidays are also completely different from Korea. There's Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Labor Day, etc., and some dates have early closings. The US market operates normally on Korean holidays, so it's common for only US stocks to move during Korean long weekends.
