When you switch from buying US stocks to European stocks, you'll encounter unfamiliar items in your transaction statement. The settlement amount is larger than the order amount, and it can't be explained solely by brokerage fees. In some European countries, governments levy taxes when you buy stocks. In Korea, you only pay a securities transaction tax when selling, and in the US, there's only a small fee for supervisory purposes when selling. However, these European taxes work in the opposite direction. The oldest example is the UK. Stamp duty is levied at 0.5% of the purchase amount. You shouldn't get confused about the judgment criteria here. This tax only applies to stocks of companies established in the UK. Even if you buy on the London Stock Exchange, it won't apply if the issuing company isn't a British entity. Conversely, it applies if it's a British entity's stock, regardless of where you bought it. The criterion is the nationality of the issuing company, not the place of transaction. AIM-listed stocks are exempt, and UCITS ETFs established in Ireland are also not subject to this. France uses the name Financial Transaction Tax. It applies to stocks of French companies with a market capitalization exceeding 1 billion euros. The tax rate increased from 0.3% to 0.4% starting April 1, 2025. Older information often states 0.3%, so be cautious. Italy also has a similar tax. It applies to Italian companies with a market capitalization exceeding 500 million euros. The tax rate for transactions in regulated markets doubled from 0.1% to 0.2% starting January 1, 2026. This has also been recently changed, so figures vary across different sources. These three countries have one thing in common: the tax is only applied when buying. This is different from Hong Kong, which levies stamp duty on both buying and selling. If you omit this difference when calculating round-trip costs, you'll overestimate the costs on the European side. Another important point is that the target is determined at the issuing company level, not at the country level. It doesn't apply to all European stocks. Many stocks listed in Germany or the Netherlands do not have such transaction taxes. Switzerland has a system where stamp duty is levied on transactions involving Swiss securities dealers, so its applicability might differ for transactions made through Korean brokerages. In practice, it's best to first check the issuing country of a stock before purchasing, and then, after your first transaction, check how the tax item is denoted on your statement. If you plan to hold for a long time, 0.4% is a one-time cost and not a significant burden. The problem arises with frequent purchases. Since it applies to every purchase, if you divide your purchases into multiple tranches, the tax will be incurred each time. These tax rates change with budget laws. France increased them in 2025, and Italy in 2026. It's safer to check the current tax rate just before purchasing rather than blindly trusting the numbers you find through a search.
