How Many Shares Can You Buy in Hong Kong Stocks — Understanding Every Lot (每手) and Transaction Costs 홍콩 주식은 몇 주부터 살 수 있나 — 每手와 거래비용
When you first try to place an order for Hong Kong stocks, you'll likely encounter two main obstacles: the order quantity and additional costs beyond the brokerage commission.
First, let's talk about quantity. Hong Kong has a minimum trading unit called 每手 (meh sau, or board lot). This is similar to the round lot system in Japan, but with a crucial difference. While Japan standardized to 100 shares per stock in 2018, Hong Kong's lots are not unified. They vary by stock.
Some stocks have a unit of 100 shares, while others have units of 500, 1000, or even 2000 shares. This means that even if a stock appears cheap, buying a full unit might require a significant amount of money. Conversely, a stock with a high price per share might be less burdensome if its unit is just 100 shares. You shouldn't judge solely by the stock price; you must always check the 每手 quantity for that specific stock. This information is usually available in the broker's stock details or on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange website.
A quantity less than the standard unit is called 碎股 (sui gu, or odd lot). Generally, you can only buy in full lots. Odd lots are traded in a separate market, but they suffer from low liquidity, meaning you might sell them at an unfavorable price. It's good to be aware in advance that dealing with odd lots, which can arise from dividend reinvestment or stock splits, can be cumbersome.
Second are the costs. Unlike in Korea or the US, Hong Kong imposes government taxes even when you buy.
Stamp duty (印花稅) is 0.1% of the transaction amount and is levied on both buy and sell sides. This rate was increased to 0.13% in 2021 but was reduced back to 0.1% effective November 17, 2023. Be cautious, as older information might state 0.13%.
In addition to this, there are small charges for the Securities and Futures Commission transaction levy and the Stock Exchange trading fee, plus your brokerage commission. Therefore, government-related costs alone amount to about 0.2% for a round trip (buy and sell). If you frequently engage in day trading, these costs can accumulate and become significant. For long-term investors, the impact is less substantial.
Also, be aware of the trading hours. In Hong Kong time, the market is open from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a lunch break. Hong Kong is one hour behind Korea, so these times correspond to 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM Korean time. This means the Hong Kong market remains open for an additional hour and a half after the Korean market closes.
Finally, Hong Kong stocks do not have daily price limits like in Korea. Movements of tens of percent within a single day are institutionally possible. Approaching the Hong Kong market with the mindset of Korea's upper and lower daily limits can be dangerous.
