Japanese Corporate Earnings: Start with the Kessan Tanshin - How to Read Page 1
When you go to the IR page to check the financial results of a Japanese company, you'll encounter a document called Kessan Tanshin This is the equivalent of a company's earnings announcement in Korea, and because it's a format required by the Tokyo Stock Exchange for listed companies, the structure is almost identical regardless of the company. This is important. Once you learn the structure, you can find the same numbers in the same places for any company.
The key is the first page. While the Kessan Tanshin can be dozens of pages long, all the summarized information is contained on the first sheet. The rest are supplementary materials.
Page 1 is divided into four sections.
First is Keiei Seiseki (経営成績), meaning business performance. This includes Uriagedaka (売上高) for sales, Eigyo Rieki (営業利益) for operating income, Keijo Rieki (経常利益) for ordinary income, and Toki Jun Rieki (当期純利益) for net income for the period. Next to each item, the percentage change from the same period last year is indicated. Keijo Rieki doesn't have a clear equivalent in Korean accounting, but it's generally accurate to consider it as operating income adjusted for non-operating gains and losses such as interest and dividends. In Japan, this figure is considered as important as operating income.
Second is Zaisei Jotai (財政状態), meaning financial condition. This includes So Shisan (総資産) for total assets, Junsan (純資産) for net assets, and Jiko Shishon Hiritu (自己資本比率) for equity ratio.
Third is Haito no Jokyo (配当の状況), regarding dividends. Dividends already paid and planned dividends are listed quarterly. The annual dividend plan can be confirmed here.
Fourth is Gyoseki Yoso (業績予想), meaning earnings forecast. This is the most important item in practice. It's the forecast for the current fiscal year presented by the company itself. Japanese companies tend to provide this guidance somewhat conservatively and have a culture of revising it quarterly. Stock prices often react more strongly to upward or downward revisions of this forecast than to the announced results. If you make a habit of looking at the forecast (予想) first, rather than the actual results (実績), you can predict market reactions much better.
Revisions to the forecast are also announced separately. When an announcement regarding a revision to earnings forecasts (業績予想の修正) is released, the stock price is likely to move significantly that day.
Finally, it's good to be aware of the notation conventions. The unit for numbers is usually Hyakuman En (百万円), meaning millions of yen. Also, negative numbers are often indicated by a delta symbol (△) instead of parentheses. △1,200 means minus 1200. If you are used to Korean documents, you might easily miss this symbol, so be careful.
