Most Japanese Companies Have a March Fiscal Year-End — How to Track Dividend Ex-Dividend Dates

Most Korean companies close their books in December. Therefore, dividend ex-dividend dates tend to be concentrated at the end of the year. Japan is different. A significant number of listed Japanese companies have a March fiscal year-end. Their fiscal year starts in April and ends in March of the following year. This aligns with the Japanese practice of starting the fiscal year for government offices and schools in April. This means three things for investors. First, dividend ex-dividend dates are concentrated at the end of March. To receive the year-end dividend from a March-closing company, you must be listed on the shareholder registry as of the end of March. Since stock settlements take a few days, buying on the last business day of March is too late. You need to move up your purchase date by a few days, and the exact date must be calculated based on the business days of that particular year. Second, interim dividends are concentrated at the end of September. Many Japanese companies pay semi-annual dividends, and for a March fiscal year-end, the interim point is September. So, you can generally remember the Japanese stock dividend seasons as March and September. Third, earnings announcements are concentrated from late April to mid-May. During this period, the entire Japanese market moves based on earnings catalysts. With the Golden Week holidays overlapping, the number of trading days decreases, making the Japanese market from late April to early May a unique period with many catalysts but few trading days. It's also worth noting the stock price movements around the ex-dividend dates. Purchases aimed at receiving dividends and shareholder benefits tend to surge before the ex-dividend date, followed by a price adjustment on the day the rights are detached. If you sell immediately after receiving the dividend, you often find that the stock price has dropped by the dividend amount, resulting in no net gain. If you hold both Korean and Japanese stocks, this time difference can actually be an advantage. Since dividend events occur in December for Korea and in March and September for Japan, your cash flow is naturally diversified. Not all Japanese companies close their books in March. Some retailers and foreign companies have fiscal year-ends in February or December. It is accurate to check the fiscal year-end month for each specific stock.
