Japanese Stock Market Trading Hours — Closing Time Extended by 30 Minutes in November 2024 일본 증시 거래시간 — 2024년 11월에 마감이 30분 늦춰졌습니다
The Japanese stock market differs from Korea's in two main ways: it has a lunch break, and its closing time was recently changed.
The current trading hours, based on Japan Standard Time, are as follows: the morning session runs from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM, followed by a lunch break from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM, and the afternoon session from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Since there is no time difference between Korea and Japan, the times indicated are also Korean Standard Time.
Starting November 5, 2024, the Tokyo Stock Exchange extended its closing time by 30 minutes, from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM. This is the first change to the closing time in 70 years, since 1954.
With this change, a closing auction was also introduced. For five minutes from 3:25 PM, only orders are accepted, and execution occurs simultaneously at 3:30 PM when the closing price is determined.
Most explanations of the Japanese stock market found on the internet, stating that it closes at 3:00 PM, predate this change. If you check the closing price at 3:00 PM based on an old blog post, you'll find the market is still open.
The lunch break actually makes a difference. The Korean stock market operates continuously from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM without interruption, whereas the Japanese market pauses at 11:30 AM. It's common for news or information released during the lunch break to be digested, leading to a gap at the start of the afternoon session. If corporate disclosures or earnings reports are released during lunchtime, they are reflected at the beginning of the afternoon session. For Korean investors, this means that the situation could change while they are having lunch.
Holidays also differ. Japan has more public holidays than Korea, and the dates are different. While the Korean stock market may be open during Japan's Golden Week, Obon, or year-end/New Year holidays, Japan is closed. Conversely, Japan is open during Korea's Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays. 도쿄증권거래소는 2024년 11월 5일부터 거래 종료 시각을 15시에서 15시 30분으로 30분 연장했습니다. 마감 시각이 바뀐 것은 1954년 이후 70년 만입니다.
이때 클로징 옥션도 함께 도입됐습니다. 15시 25분부터 5분간은 주문만 받고 체결은 되지 않으며, 15시 30분에 한꺼번에 종가가 결정되는 방식입니다.
인터넷에 남아 있는 일본 증시는 오후 3시에 끝난다는 설명은 대부분 이 변경 이전의 정보입니다. 오래된 블로그 글을 보고 3시에 종가를 확인하면 아직 장이 열려 있습니다.
점심 휴장은 실제로 차이를 만듭니다. 한국 증시는 9시부터 15시 30분까지 쉬지 않고 돌아가지만 일본은 11시 30분에 한 번 끊깁니다. 오전에 나온 재료가 점심 휴장 동안 소화되면서 후장 시작에 갭이 생기는 일이 흔합니다. 기업 공시나 실적 발표가 점심시간에 나오면 후장 시작과 동시에 반영됩니다. 한국 투자자 입장에서는 점심 먹는 사이에 상황이 바뀌어 있을 수 있다는 뜻입니다.
휴장일도 다릅니다. 일본은 공휴일이 한국보다 많고 날짜도 다릅니다. 골든위크와 오봉, 연말연시에는 한국 증시가 열려도 일본은 쉽니다. 반대로 한국의 설과 추석 연휴에는 일본이 정상 개장합니다. 양쪽 시장을 함께 보는 투자자라면 두 나라 휴장일 달력을 따로 챙겨두는 것이 좋습니다.
