Why Japanese Stocks Require 100 Shares at a Time — Understanding the Unit Share System
In Korean stocks, you can buy from one share. You can even buy just one share of Samsung Electronics. However, when you place an order for Japanese stocks, orders are only accepted in blocks of 100 shares. To buy a stock priced at 3,000 yen, you need at least 300,000 yen.
Japan uses a minimum trading unit called 'tangen-kabu' (unit share). In the past, companies had different minimums like 1, 10, 100, or 1,000 shares, but in October 2018, all listed companies unified this to 100 shares. Now, stocks listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange are, in principle, all traded in 100-share units.
There's no such system in the Korean market. Therefore, Korean investors new to Japanese stocks are often puzzled by the high minimum investment amount. For a stock priced at 5,000 yen, the minimum purchase amount per transaction is 500,000 yen, which is around 5 million Korean won.
There are exceptions. Japanese securities firms offer services that allow purchases of less than 100 shares. These are called 'tangen-miman-kabu' (fractional shares), and the name varies by brokerage firm.
However, there's a catch. This is a service provided by Japanese brokerages. Many Korean brokerage firms that facilitate trading of Japanese stocks do not support trading of fractional shares. If you want to start trading Japanese stocks with a small amount in Korea, you must first check if your brokerage supports odd-lot trading.
Furthermore, fractional shares usually do not come with voting rights and are excluded from shareholder benefits. They may also not support real-time limit orders, with trades executed only at specific times a few times a day.
Here's how to approach it. When selecting stocks, first calculate the amount by multiplying the stock price by 100. This is your actual minimum purchase cost per transaction. If you want to diversify, you'll need significantly more capital than for Korean stocks. For just five stocks, the minimum purchase amount alone could reach tens of millions of won.
If you want exposure to the Japanese market with a small amount, Japanese index ETFs are a more realistic alternative than individual stocks.
