Japan's market on July 23rd will likely continue to focus on the escalating tensions in the Red Sea. Reports of attacks on Saudi tankers by Yemen's Houthi rebels have raised new concerns about oil prices and global logistics, with particular attention on the impact on Japan's energy supply and shipping sectors. The yen's weakening trend persists in the currency market, and pressure on import prices is also a consideration. The situation in the Red Sea is intensifying further. The Houthi rebels in Yemen announced they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. This marks the first tanker attack in the Red Sea, and the Houthis have indicated their intention to continue a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia. In response to this news, concerns about the global oil supply chain have strengthened, with New York crude oil futures (WTI) temporarily reaching $88.11 per barrel (+1.28, +1.47%) in after-hours trading. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea is a critical chokepoint that handles up to 7% of the world's crude oil supply, and moves towards a blockade could exert further upward pressure on energy prices. The shipping sector is directly reacting to these geopolitical risks. Since the latter half of last year, Houthi attacks on vessels have continued, forcing many shipping companies to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope. This increases transit times by about 7 to 14 days, leading to soaring maritime freight rates and insurance premiums. The stock price of Japan's major shipping company, Nippon Yusen (9101), showed an upward trend from its closing price of 5,506 yen on July 14th to 5,818 yen on July 22nd, and it rebounded significantly with increased trading volume on July 17th when news of the Red Sea blockade preparations emerged. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (9104) was trading at 5,790 yen (+7, +0.12%) in the night PTS on July 22nd, and Kawasaki Kisen (9107) has also seen its stock price rise recently. The escalation of the Red Sea situation is expected to continue to boost shipping stocks due to expectations of improved earnings from rising freight rates. In the currency market, the USD/JPY is trading around 163.10-163.12 yen as of 8:27 AM today, indicating a continued weakening trend for the yen. Japan, as an island nation, relies on maritime transport for 99.6% of its trade volume. Increases in oil prices and maritime freight rates due to the Red Sea situation will push up Japan's energy procurement costs and overall import prices. Consequently, the Japanese economy may face prolonged inflationary pressures, and the impact on corporate earnings requires close monitoring. Today, further developments in the Middle East situation, its impact on the oil and shipping markets, and its ripple effects on Japanese corporate supply chains will remain areas of focus. The Nikkei 225 index saw a slight decline yesterday, July 22nd, closing at 66,115.60 yen (-116.59, -0.17%), but the movements of individual sectors in response to the Middle East situation could influence the overall market direction. Sources: minkabu.jp, livedoor.com, nippon.com, khb-tv.co.jp本日7月23日の日本市場は、紅海情勢の緊迫化が引き続き主要な焦点となるでしょう。 出典: minkabu.jp, livedoor.com, nippon.com, khb-tv.co.jp

What's the point if Japanese shipping stocks go up... In Korea, we just run ships like crazy, that's all.

But Japanese shipping stocks are going up? lmao we have way more ships than them, so shouldn't it be worse for us?

Lmao, as Banggol said, it's true that Korea feels that kind of shipping risk more directly because our land is small. Japan, though it's an island nation, maybe it's because their shipping companies are so big and diverse.
