The Kospi fell almost 4% yesterday. No Korean company did anything. US forces hit an Iranian launch site in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran fired back the same day, and crude and US Treasury yields jumped together. That was the whole story.
Foreigners and institutions sold about 4 trillion won between them. Individuals bought 2.3 trillion. Nothing unusual there.
What came next is the part worth a look. Near the close, the most-searched names on Korean retail boards were not Samsung Electronics or SK Hynix. Inverse natural gas. Inverse iron ore. Yen-dollar futures. Not companies. ETNs.
When the thing that moved the market sits outside the market, Korean retail goes and buys the outside thing. And it can. The Korea Exchange lists a long shelf of ETNs tracking crude, natural gas, iron ore and currencies. They are priced in won and bought like a stock. No futures account. No separate margin to post. If oil is moving, you type one more ticker into the account you already have.
It is not wide open. Leveraged and 2x inverse products require a course from the industry's investor-education institute before the buy button unlocks. People clear that in advance and sit there waiting for a day like this one.
Where you are, is there something you have to pass before a leveraged product is allowed into your account, or is it just on the shelf?어제 코스피가 4% 가까이 빠졌습니다. 한국 회사가 한 일은 없습니다. 미군이 호르무즈 해협의 이란 발사대를 때렸고 이란이 곧바로 반격했습니다. 국제유가와 미 국채금리가 같이 튀었고, 그게 전부입니다.
외국인과 기관이 합쳐 4조 원 가까이 던졌습니다. 개인이 2조 3천억 원어치를 받았습니다. 여기까지는 흔한 장면입니다.
그다음이 좀 다릅니다. 장 마감 무렵 국내 증권 커뮤니티에서 가장 많이 검색된 것은 삼성전자도 SK하이닉스도 아니었습니다. 천연가스 인버스, 철광석 인버스, 엔달러 선물. 회사가 아니라 ETN입니다.
시장을 흔든 것이 밖에 있으면, 한국 개인투자자는 그 밖에 있는 것을 사러 갑니다. 그리고 그게 됩니다. 한국거래소에는 원유·천연가스·철광석·환율을 따라가는 ETN이 줄줄이 상장돼 있습니다. 원화로, 주식처럼 삽니다. 해외 선물 계좌를 열 일도 증거금을 따로 넣을 일도 없습니다. 유가가 움직이는 게 보이면 쓰던 계좌에 티커 하나만 더 치면 됩니다.
문턱이 아예 없지는 않습니다. 레버리지와 인버스 2X 상품은 금융투자교육원 사전교육을 이수해야 매수 버튼이 열립니다. 그 문턱을 넘어놓고 기다리는 사람이 그만큼 있다는 뜻이기도 합니다.
그쪽은 원유나 금리에 대한 생각이 생겼을 때 그걸 담을 그릇이 뭡니까. 자기 나라 거래소에 상장돼 있습니까, 아니면 다른 시장까지 나가야 합니까.
